Every major project management vendor shipped significant AI capability between November 2025 and April 2026. Every vendor blog claims the result is transformative. Every SERP result on “AI in project management” is either vendor content or affiliate content promoting a vendor. The category has never been more heavily marketed and never less honestly reviewed.
This review is the honest assessment after two months of using all five major platforms’ AI capability on real project work. It names specific tasks the AI handles well, specific tasks it handles poorly, and the failure mode common to every vendor that vendor marketing consistently omits. Where credit is due, it will be given. Where vendor claims outrun product reality, they will be named.
Short answer up front: the 2026 wave of PM AI is genuinely useful for a narrow set of tasks (summarisation, first-draft generation, cross-workspace search) and dangerous when trusted for the tasks it is being marketed for (autonomous project management, independent risk judgement, scheduling decisions without supervision). The best implementations treat AI as a time-saving assistant on well-bounded tasks; the worst treat it as a junior project manager, and the failure mode of that trust is expensive.
What AI agents in PM actually are
The marketing language has collapsed the distinction between three different kinds of AI capability, and separating them matters more than most comparisons suggest.
AI assistants are conversational interfaces that answer questions about your workspace. You ask “what is blocking the Q2 launch,” the assistant reads your project data and writes a response. The assistant does not take action autonomously; it reports and suggests. Every vendor in this comparison has an assistant. They are the most mature category.
AI automations are trigger-based workflows that run AI inside an automation pipeline. When a task is created, run an AI block that categorises it. When a form is submitted, use AI to extract key fields and create structured tasks. These have been around longer than “agents” and are the most production-stable AI capability in PM tools.
AI agents are the category vendors are now marketing heavily. An agent has some autonomy — it can take actions (update statuses, create tasks, send messages) without a user explicitly asking for each action. The degree of autonomy varies significantly across vendors, and the honest word for what most “agents” currently deliver is “supervised automation with a conversational interface.”
Confusing these categories is the primary source of exaggerated expectations. A vendor marketing an “autonomous AI project manager” is usually selling category-two or category-three capability dressed as something more.
What they do well (honestly)
Five specific tasks where the current generation of PM AI genuinely saves time. This is the section vendor content rushes through to get to the speculative stuff; it is the most important section for deciding whether to buy.
Summarisation. Asking the AI to summarise status across a project, a set of updates over a time window, or a long comment thread works reliably across all five platforms. The output is first-draft quality — needs a light edit — but the time savings are genuine. For status reports, executive updates, and stakeholder comms, this is the most-used AI capability by real teams.
Cross-workspace search with natural language. Being able to ask “find all tasks assigned to Priya that are overdue and tagged high-priority across our active client projects” and get a usable answer in seconds is genuinely better than the filter-configuration dance generalist PM tools required before. This works across all five platforms, with Jira’s Rovo Search and Smartsheet’s Claude integration being the most useful at portfolio scale.
First-draft generation. Drafting project briefs, status updates, meeting agendas, or user stories from a short prompt works well. The AI will not write final copy, but it generates first drafts that reduce writing time by roughly half. Asana’s AI Teammates (particularly the Campaign Brief Writer) and ClickUp Brain are strongest here.
Transcription and meeting capture. Automatic meeting transcription, action-item extraction, and linking decisions back to task records works well enough to be worth using. ClickUp’s SyncUps (launched with 4.0 in December 2025) and monday’s Notetaker are both usable. Quality is good; it is not perfect and requires review before assigning extracted actions.
Automation-builder guidance. Using natural language to describe an automation and having the AI configure it works well across monday, Asana, and ClickUp. This used to require understanding each platform’s automation syntax; now you can describe what you want and get a working automation. Non-technical users benefit most.
What they do poorly (specifically)
Four specific tasks where AI agents in PM tools are being marketed harder than the capability delivers. This is the section that matters for avoiding expensive mistakes.
Autonomous project management. No PM AI in 2026 can be trusted to run a project without human supervision. The marketing “your AI project manager” or “delegate your PM work” is ahead of the product. Agents misread priorities, miss context a human PM would catch, and make confident-sounding updates that are factually wrong. Using AI as a project manager rather than a project manager’s assistant is the single most common expensive mistake teams make with this category.
Risk judgement and independent prioritisation. Cross-tool workflow orchestration. The vendor pitch “your AI agent can read your CRM, update your PM tool, notify Slack, and log to your accounting system” is currently fragile. The MCP protocol has made this meaningfully better in 2026 — Jira Rovo and Smartsheet’s Claude integration are both real progress — but production-grade multi-tool agent orchestration still requires careful configuration and regular supervision to keep working. The demos are better than the daily reality.

monday Sidekick
General availability since January 2026 after roughly a year in beta, monday Sidekick is the most mature of the board-oriented AI assistants. It operates cross-contextually across boards, docs, and people, understanding the relationships between them rather than just the data within any single board.
What it does well: executive summaries across multi-board programmes, board-level insight on what is changing and what is slipping, prompt-driven automation configuration (particularly useful for non-technical team members), and through monday’s MCP integration, connecting monday data to Claude or ChatGPT for external analysis. The UX integration is tighter than competitors — Sidekick feels native rather than bolted on.
What the marketing overstates: autonomous agent capability. Sidekick Plus and Super Sidekick are positioned as capable of running meaningful work independently, but in practice the credit-based pricing means running agents heavily costs real money, and the supervision required to prevent confident-wrong outputs does not scale with the autonomy claims.
Pricing reality: Sidekick Lite is included in the paid plans, but Plus and Super Sidekick use a credit-based model that makes sustained heavy use expensive. For a 25-person team running Sidekick heavily, expect AI costs to approach the base subscription cost annually.
Asana AI Studio and AI Teammates
Asana shipped two distinct products in parallel: AI Studio (workflow-automation focused, with credit-based tiers — Basic, Plus, Pro) and AI Teammates (launched March 2026, with 21 pre-built specialised agents).
What it does well: the Teammates model is the best-designed agent architecture in this comparison. Each Teammate is scoped to a specific role (Campaign Brief Writer, Launch Planner, Status Reporter, Sprint Coach, Compliance Specialist, and 16 more), which prevents the generic-AI-trying-to-do-everything failure mode. The checkpoint system — Teammates pause to show work before continuing — is a material safety feature compared to purely autonomous agents. AI Studio handles the automation-pipeline use cases well. Both support routing between OpenAI and Anthropic models, which is genuine architectural flexibility.
What the marketing overstates: Teammates “act as real teammates” implies more autonomy than the product delivers. They work best as supervised specialists on well-bounded tasks, not as independent actors running workflows.
Pricing reality: AI Studio Basic is included in Starter and above. Plus adds roughly 100K credits per month, Pro adds 5M per quarter — burn through the credits and the smart layer stops working until the next billing cycle. Teammates are a paid add-on on top. ClickUp Brain
Refreshed substantially with ClickUp 4.0 (launched 9 December 2025; 3.0 deprecated 27 March 2026), ClickUp Brain is the broadest AI surface in this category. Connected Search indexes tasks, docs, chat, meetings, and third-party apps. Autopilot Agents watch for triggers and execute actions. AI Notetaker transcribes meetings. AI Planner auto-schedules. Multi-model routing across GPT-5, Claude, and o3 is native.
What it does well: breadth. No other platform gives you this many AI capabilities in one place. The SyncUps built-in video with automatic transcription is particularly strong. The Enterprise AI Search across tasks, docs, chat, and connected apps is the most useful cross-workspace search in the category. For teams that want one AI layer across many work types, ClickUp Brain is the broadest offering.
What the marketing overstates: that Brain is a complete replacement for dedicated AI tools. It is not. The multi-model routing is useful but not as deep as using Claude or GPT directly. The agents are capable but not materially more autonomous than competitors. Vendor marketing implying ClickUp Brain replaces a suite of dedicated AI tools is ahead of the product.
Pricing reality: AI Standard at $9/user/month is heavily rate-limited on the agents that matter. AI Autopilot at $28/user/month is where the capability actually works at scale, and combined with ClickUp Business base at $12/user/month that is $40/user/month — more than most competitors’ equivalent tier.
Jira Rovo
Atlassian opened the beta of agents in Jira on 25 February 2026, and the Rovo MCP Server went to GA the same day. This is the most enterprise-serious AI agent architecture in the comparison.
What it does well: governance and permission architecture. Rovo agents operate inside Jira’s existing permission structures, project configurations, and approval workflows. When an agent updates an issue, the update is captured alongside human work item history with the same audit trail. For regulated industries or any context where AI-modified work items flow into code review, release planning, or compliance documentation, this is meaningfully different from competitors whose agents operate with quasi-admin privileges. What the marketing overstates: breadth beyond engineering-adjacent work. Rovo is strong for engineering, compliance, and DevOps. The marketing that positions it as a general-purpose work AI is ahead of the product — for non-engineering teams (marketing, sales, ops), Rovo feels narrower than ClickUp Brain or monday Sidekick.
Pricing reality: Rovo is included in Jira Cloud Standard, Premium, and Enterprise plans — not a separate add-on. For teams already paying for Jira Premium, this is the best AI value in the category.
Smartsheet’s Claude and MCP integration
Smartsheet shipped the Claude connector on 2 March 2026 and the public MCP Server later that month, with over 4,000 enterprise accounts adopting the MCP Server in its first week. ChatGPT and Gemini support through the same server followed in April 2026.
What it does well: cross-workspace analytical capability at portfolio scale. If you have 40+ Smartsheet workspaces, asking Claude natural-language questions like “find all overdue tasks across our Q2 customer implementation sheets with risk flags set” is genuinely useful. The architectural flexibility — not being locked into one AI vendor — matters for enterprises with a defined AI strategy.
What the marketing overstates: autonomous task management. The marketing language about “moving beyond the chat phase” and “real impact on team productivity” is more confident than the product warrants. As an analytical and summarisation tool for administrators managing large portfolios, it is excellent. As an autonomous project manager, it is not there.

The common failure mode across all of them
One pattern shows up in every vendor’s AI capability in 2026, and vendor marketing consistently omits it.
The confident-wrong output problem. The AI produces outputs that sound authoritative — fluent prose, specific details, structured recommendations — at a higher rate than the outputs are factually correct. A human reading AI-generated status would not be able to distinguish “this is accurate” from “this is hallucinated” without manual verification. When the AI is wrong, it is wrong in ways that cost real time to correct, and the cost of verification often approaches the cost of just doing the work manually.
This is not a vendor-specific problem. It is a current-state-of-LLMs problem. But the implications are under-acknowledged by vendors who ship AI as “autonomous.” Here is the honest pattern across every platform:
- AI-generated summaries are correct about 85–90% of the time for well-bounded, recent data.
- AI-generated recommendations are useful about 50–70% of the time depending on the complexity of the judgement.
- AI-generated autonomous actions (without human review before execution) carry a 10–20% “that is not what I would have done” rate.
At the 10–20% wrong rate, AI acting autonomously creates cleanup work that can exceed the work it saved. When to wait 12 months
An unusual recommendation, but a defensible one for some teams.
AI in PM tools is evolving fast enough that what you buy in Q2 2026 will be substantially different from what is available in Q2 2027. Teams that have specific, urgent AI-assisted workflow needs should buy now. Teams that are buying primarily on the strength of future roadmap claims should wait.
Wait if: your use case is autonomous agent-driven work (the category that has the biggest gap between marketing and reality today). Wait if your team does not have a specific task the AI saves time on — buying AI capability you do not have a use case for wastes money. Wait if your existing tooling is not a pain point — the AI alone is unlikely to change your tool calculus.
Buy now if: you have a team that will genuinely use summarisation, first-draft generation, or cross-workspace search regularly. Buy now if your compliance or engineering governance needs specifically benefit from Rovo-style permission-aware AI. Buy now if the AI integration is bundled into a tool you would buy anyway — Jira Rovo being included in Jira plans makes it essentially free from a budget perspective.
